Why Teal Health sought a modern, API-first EHR partner
Flexibility, cost discipline, and seamless connectivity guided Teal Health’s evaluation of competing EHRs.
As Teal Health worked to scale its cervical cancer screening offering, the team needed an EHR that could meet the demands of a fast-moving, early-stage digital health organization. “We needed an EHR partner that was API-forward, flexible, and startup-friendly — one that could support our unique workflows across clinical documentation, billing, and telehealth,” explains Teal’s Head of Product, Polina Segalova. For Teal, an EHR wasn’t just a compliance requirement, but the foundational infrastructure that needed to integrate seamlessly with their product, evolve with their care model, and avoid slowing down operational growth.
To identify the right platform, the team “conducted a comprehensive search across the EHR landscape — reviewing key players, comparing capabilities, and speaking with industry peers for referrals.” Teal evaluated Elation and AthenaHealth as strong contenders, but ultimately, Segalova notes, “Healthie’s modern API infrastructure, overall cost, and startup-oriented approach made it the best fit for our needs.” Teal needed flexibility and scalability — and found both.
Leveraging Healthie as its core infrastructure enables Teal Health to rapidly iterate
Healthie’s seamless integration with Teal’s existing product enables the engineering team to focus on a differentiated patient experience.
Teal selected Healthie for its developer-friendly APIs, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with the pace and flexibility required by startups. This choice allowed the team to support speedy iteration while seamlessly integrating the platform with its product architecture.
The partnership with Healthie also allowed the team to focus on product innovation. As Segalova explains, “Healthie allowed us to focus our limited engineering resources on our patient-facing portal, while providing the infrastructure we needed and allowing our providers to complete their workflows.”
Today, Teal relies most heavily on Healthie for scheduling and telehealth visits — including its Zoom integration — as well as clinical documentation and CMS-1500 generation. Looking ahead, Teal expects Healthie to remain core to its infrastructure and is “excited to tap into more of Healthie’s tools and integrations, especially Healthie Harbor and forward-looking investments in AI,” notes Segalova.
