Protera Health needed a scalable solution to support rapid expansion of collaborative care
Protera Health needed an API-first platform to support fast iteration, provider coordination, and patient engagement.
Protera Health is a value-based care organization delivering integrated musculoskeletal (MSK) care through a fully virtual, physician-led, multidisciplinary model. “The idea was that if we equip our best-in-class multidisciplinary care teams with integrated technology, we could achieve a true integrated practice unit (IPU) delivery model and make it far more scalable than brick-and-mortar models,” Protera Health’s Senior Director of Operations, Jake Chase, PT, DPT, COMT.
As they began to rapidly grow, Jake and the Protera Health team recognized they needed an API-first solution capable of growing alongside them. “Our EMR at the time was fairly static and not integrated into our similarly rapidly evolving technology infrastructure. We needed a platform that could scale with us, integrate with our internal tools, handle fast iteration, and support custom workflows,” said Chase.
Protera Health leadership searched for a platform that could coordinate across clinical, administrative, and billing teams, handle complex billing across direct invoicing and in-network (medical claims) value-based contracts, and provide advanced tools for asynchronous patient engagement with embedded communication, education, and outcome-tracking tools.

Chase explains that “now we can pull everything into Healthie to build our own ledgers and deliver bespoke billing models to our health plan partners, all of whom have their own desired way to get invoiced — whether directly or through claims.” This consolidation eliminated the need to reconcile data across platforms, saving time and reducing errors in financial reporting.
Protera Health also leverages Healthie’s editable charting tools to keep pace with evolving workflows. “It’s very, very easy and intuitive,” Chase noted. Combined with Healthie’s patient engagement tools for asynchronous education and communication, the platform enabled Protera Health to scale efficiently while staying true to its integrated, high-touch care model.
