Send Audio Messages in Chat

Record and send short voice messages within a chat conversation, available to both providers and clients on web and mobile. Useful for conveying tone and emotion that text can't capture, or for clients who find speaking easier than typing, including those with a hearing impairment or difficulty writing. Providers can delete a sent audio message; clients cannot.

The problem it solves

Text-based chat doesn't always convey tone or emotional context well, and some clients find it easier or more accessible to speak a message rather than type one. This solves that by letting either party record and send a short voice message directly within the same chat thread used for text.

What's included

  • In-chat audio recording and playback, available to both providers and clients
  • Consistent functionality across web browser and mobile app
  • Standard chat notification delivery for received audio messages
  • Provider-only deletion of sent audio messages

How it works

From an open or new chat conversation, a user taps or clicks the microphone button at the bottom of the conversation to start recording, then sends the resulting audio clip the same way a text message would be sent. The recipient sees the audio message in the conversation and receives a standard new-message notification if their notification settings are enabled; tapping the play button plays the recording. On the web browser, a provider can hover over a sent audio message and delete it if needed; clients do not have this option.

Send Audio Messages in Chat lets providers and clients record and send short voice recordings directly within a chat conversation, as an alternative to typing a message. It's built to capture nuance and emotion that text alone often misses, and to make communication more accessible for clients who find speaking easier than typing, including those with a hearing impairment or difficulty submitting written text. Audio messages work the same way on the web browser and the Healthie mobile app, and recipients receive a standard chat notification the same as they would for a text message. Providers can delete an audio message they've sent, while clients cannot delete audio messages once sent.
