HSA and FSA Card Payments

Accept HSA and FSA cards the same way as any other credit or debit card, provided your Stripe account is configured with the correct medical merchant category code (MCC 8099). This code is only available to licensed healthcare providers; life coaching, nutrition, and wellness-only services generally don't qualify for HSA/FSA eligibility under Stripe's rules. If a card is declined, clients can request an invoice to submit for reimbursement instead.

The problem it solves

Clients with high-deductible health plans often want to pay with pre-tax HSA or FSA funds, but whether that's even possible depends on a merchant classification most providers don't know they need to check. This solves that by explaining how HSA/FSA eligibility is determined and giving a fallback (invoicing for reimbursement) when a card can't be processed directly.

What's included

  • HSA/FSA card acceptance through the same billing flow as credit/debit cards
  • Automatic medical merchant category code (MCC 8099) configuration attempt on Stripe accounts
  • HSA/FSA vs. personal card designation when storing multiple cards on a client's profile
  • Standard Stripe processing fees, with no additional fee for HSA/FSA transactions
  • Invoice-based fallback for clients whose HSA/FSA card is declined, for offline reimbursement submission

How it works

When a provider sets up payment processing in Healthie, a Stripe account is created on their behalf, and Healthie attempts to configure it with a medical merchant category code (MCC 8099), which is required for HSA/FSA cards to be accepted. Stripe reviews and assigns this code only to licensed healthcare providers, so accounts for services like life or nutrition coaching typically cannot be configured this way. Once eligible, a provider processes an HSA/FSA card exactly like a regular card, through Client Packages, invoices, or a direct charge, and can mark it as HSA/FSA on the client's profile if they also have a personal card on file. If a transaction is declined, providers should confirm with the client that the card is active and has eligible funds; if it still doesn't process, sending an invoice lets the client pay another way and submit the invoice to their HSA/FSA administrator for reimbursement.

HSA and FSA Card Payments let providers accept Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account cards through the same billing flow as any other credit or debit card, provided their Stripe account carries the correct medical merchant category code. Healthie attempts to set this code (MCC 8099) automatically for every provider account, but Stripe only assigns it to accounts belonging to licensed healthcare providers, so services like life coaching or nutrition-only counseling typically can't be configured to accept these cards. Cards can be marked as HSA/FSA versus personal when stored on a client's profile, and standard Stripe processing fees apply the same as any other card. If a client's HSA/FSA card is declined, they can be sent an invoice instead, which they can print and submit to their plan administrator for direct reimbursement.
